Nobody likes to think about their vulnerable older relative being abused … unfortunately, this is exactly the type of situation that is all too common in this country. According to one study conducted by NCOA.org, about one out of every 10 Americans over the age of 60 has experienced some form of abuse at the hands of a caregiver.
When you also consider the general population of the country, this breaks down to as many as five million people who suffer elder abuse each year. To make matters worse, only about one out of every 14 of those cases is actually reported to the proper authorities. This happens to both men and women, and can come from a variety of places — a care nurse, medical staff or even a family member.
Naturally, this is a problem that needs to be addressed at all costs, and many concerned family members are turning to the wonders of modern technology to do exactly that. Such is the case with one woman from the United Kingdom who recently suspected that her mother’s care nurse was NOT what she appeared to be. The daughter set up a hidden camera and was absolutely shocked by what she discovered.
Using Hidden Cameras to Protect the Elderly
The woman from the United Kingdom revealed that she didn’t actually set up a hidden camera in their home thinking she was going to catch a case of elder abuse in progress. She and her siblings simply assumed that the care nurse in question was being lazy — that she wasn’t actually doing the job she was being paid to do.
If she had only captured evidence of laziness on her camera, this story would have a much happier ending.
The woman set up the hidden camera and went about her day, reviewing the footage later that evening. What she found was shocking, to say the least. She watched as Stacey George — the care nurse from a local facility — repeatedly told her frail mother (who is 78 and has dementia) that she “stinks.” She also recorded evidence of the nurse snatching away her mother’s blanket, slapping her multiple times and doing all sorts of other terrible things.
The elderly woman, who is also a diabetic and is partially blind, was in absolutely no position to defend herself. Her daughter, fortunately, was.
The footage revealed that just ten minutes after the older woman’s daughter left the room, the abuse began. When reviewing the footage, the woman watched in horror as the nurse slapped her elderly mother not one but five separate times. She immediately confronted the care nurse with her findings and quickly fired her.
It’s important to note that while the family did take the video footage to the police, the care nurse was only let off with a warning. The family fully expected her to be charged, but she wasn’t. A representative from the Northamptonshire Police Department said that they had conducted an investigation of the incident and would soon be meeting with the family to discuss their decision.
To make matters worse, out of the nearly two years that this older woman was under the care of nurses from this single provider, this particular abusive nurse had handled more than 96 percent of the total visits. The company admitted that she had essentially ONLY been cared for by this particular person, meaning there is really no telling how often this happened in the past.
The family said they released the recording to the local news as a warning to families everywhere. When you have a loved one who needs to be cared for, oftentimes you have no choice but to turn to these third-party providers for assistance. Yet at the same time, you truly never know if they’re doing what they’re supposed to do or if they’re being abusive towards your elderly family members. Everyone needs to be as careful as possible moving forward to help prevent situations like this from happening again in the future.
