The New Spy Watch From TAG Heuer: What You Need to Know

If you think back about the 1995 film “GoldenEye,” one sequence in particular probably sticks out – after the incredible tank chase through the streets of St. Petersburg, of course. Super spy, James Bond, is trapped on board a train with Bond girl, Natalya, with just seconds left before it explodes. There is an escape latch, but it’s sealed up tight. Suddenly, Bond remembers – the watch he was given by Q earlier in the movie fires lasers (because why wouldn’t it). He uses the watch to break through the lock, and the two escape with seconds left to spare.
The New Spy Watch From TAG Heuer
While spy watches that fire lasers may not be available to purchase by just anyone, there IS a new product from TAG Heuer that takes a bold step in the right direction. The Connected Modular 45 smartwatch promises to be an essential part of anyone’s spy arsenal – whether you’re currently trying to save the world or not.

The Connected Modular 45 Smartwatch

TAG Heuer’s brand new watch actually has its roots in another spy franchise – not bond, but “Kingsman.” It is set to debut alongside the sequel to “Kingsman: The Secret Service,” appropriately titled “Kingsman: The Golden Circle.” Many people think that “Kingsman” began life as a parody of those Bond films, but it really didn’t – it’s based on a pretty straightforward comic book of the same name, written by Mark Millar and drawn by the great Dave Gibbons of “Watchmen” fame.

When you look at the watch, the connection to that film franchise is immediate – it sports the official “Kingsman” logo on the back of the case, on the sundial and even on the buckle. Another “Kingsman” inscription can be seen at three o’clock on the dial, as well as strategically in other areas like the inside of the bracelet. The watch itself will even vibrate twice a day for ten seconds and display the film’s logo on screen, in the event that you somehow forgot you were wearing a movie promotional smartwatch.

The screen itself features a scratch-resistant sapphire cover glass of just 2.5mm in thickness. It’s a touch display built with state-of-the-art AMOLED technology, allowing it to support multiple points of finger recognition, a 400 by 400-pixel resolution and 287ppi. It’s also powered by Android Wear, allowing you to sync and collect information via the watch with your compatible smartphone or tablet device.

A Watch That Lets You Dress to Impress

Even going beyond these connected “spy” features, the watch still impresses in more ways than one. It’s got a microphone located right at the 3 o’clock position, and the associated proximity sensor is visible on the caseback at 6 o’clock. It’s water resistant up to 50 meters and features sandblasted titanium bezel wings with a black carbide coating and anti-fingerprint technology.

Best of all, the watch itself will actually feature prominently in the film – similar in concept to some of the products that James Bond uses and wears over in that neck of the woods, particularly during the product-placement-heavy Sony years. It will be sported by main character, Eggsy, as he works with his “Statesmen” brothers from the United States in an effort to save the world from whatever evil scheme Julianne Moore is up to (no spoilers – the movie doesn’t come out in the US until September 22nd).

All told, the TAG Heuer Connected Modular 45 smartwatch has something to offer just about everyone – particularly if you’re already a fan of the “Kingsman” franchise or spy movies in general. Here is hoping the “Kingsman” sequel is as good as the last one, as it would be a shame to drop this much money (the starting price is a cool $1,700) for something that ties directly into a film you’re not really a fan of.
